Old Castle Lachlan in Paint

Old Castle Lachlan was a painting where I wanted to capture the atmosphere of the landscape as much as the castle itself. The ruins sit quietly within the surrounding hills, with the water, reflections and changing sky all playing an important role in creating the mood of the scene.

The castle is not the only focus of the painting. I was interested in the way the structure becomes part of the wider landscape, surrounded by the green hills and reflected in the calm water below. The soft pink and purple tones in the sky create a peaceful atmosphere, contrasting with the deeper greens and darker tones of the land.

Rather than creating a simple photographic record of the view, I wanted this painting to focus on the feeling of the place. The changing light, the quietness of the landscape and the relationship between the castle ruins and the surrounding environment all helped shape the final artwork.

Capturing The Atmosphere Of The Scottish Landscape

One of the things I enjoy most about landscape painting is finding the elements that make a place feel unique. With Old Castle Lachlan, the landscape itself became just as important as the building within it.

The distant hills create a strong sense of space, while the water and reflections help bring balance to the composition. The sky was also an important part of the painting, with layers of soft colour creating a changing light that gives the scene its atmosphere.

I often look beyond the obvious subject when creating a painting. A castle, mountain or coastline can provide the starting point, but it is the surrounding light, colour and mood that help bring the artwork to life.

The Role Of Colour And Texture

Texture is an important part of my painting process. The layered surface allows the landscape to develop depth, with subtle changes across the hills, sky and water creating movement within the scene.

The contrast between the warm tones in the sky and the cooler greens and darker colours of the landscape helps create the feeling of a quiet moment within the Scottish countryside. These choices are not about copying every detail exactly, but about creating an interpretation of the place that captures its character.

Old Castle Lachlan Prints

The original Old Castle Lachlan painting was created as a unique piece of artwork, but I also offer prints of this painting for those who would like to bring the scene into their own home.

You can explore the available Old Castle Lachlan prints, including fine art prints created from the original artwork.

Each print allows the colours, atmosphere and details of the original painting to be enjoyed in a different way, making this Scottish landscape available to more people who have a connection with the place or simply enjoy the mood of the artwork.

A Little About Me

I was born and raised in Greenock and have been painting since childhood. I trained in Interior Design in Glasgow and have also worked in areas including film and theatre set design, experiences which have influenced my approach to composition, colour and creating atmosphere.

Commission Your Own Scottish Landscape Painting

Paintings like Old Castle Lachlan are part of why I enjoy creating original landscape commissions. A place can hold memories, personal meaning and a strong emotional connection, and my aim is to translate that into an original artwork.

The commission process begins with discussing your ideas, the location that matters to you and the feeling you would like the finished painting to capture. Throughout the process, I provide updates as the artwork develops to ensure the final piece feels personal and meaningful.
