About this painting.
There's a special kind of quiet that falls over the Scottish Highlands in winter, especially after fresh snow. That stillness is what I wanted to capture in this original painting, "A Winter Highland Tree." I was struck by the stark beauty of this lone tree standing resilient against the cold, a dark silhouette against the bright, snow-covered landscape and the soft, diffused winter light in the sky.
This winter landscape painting is all about atmosphere and texture. I used layers of paint to build up the feeling of the deep snow, contrasting it with the rough bark of the tree and the subtle, cool tones in the distant hills. It’s an atmospheric painting that tries to convey the crisp air and the peaceful solitude of the Highlands during winter.
