About this painting.
Sometimes, it's the simple, unassuming scenes that hold the most charm. That's certainly how I felt when I came across Burn Altmore Cottage. This original painting is all about capturing the character of that rustic Scottish cottage, particularly its striking blue door which just seemed to pop against the old stone and the surrounding landscape.
I wanted to convey the texture – the rough stonework, the feel of the weathered wood, the sense of a place lived-in and part of the Highlands scenery. You'll see I've used thicker paint application in areas to give it that tactile quality. It’s an original Scottish painting that focuses on the quiet beauty found in everyday rural life.
The light on the day I was inspired by this scene was soft, adding to the peaceful atmosphere. Painting this cottage landscape wasn't about grand vistas, but about the intimate connection between the structure and its environment. It’s a piece of contemporary Scottish art that celebrates these hidden gems.
