About this painting.
I created “Cairngorms Waterfall Abstract” as a tribute to the raw, elemental energy of the highland landscape. In my mind’s eye I stood beside a tumbling waterfall in the Cairngorms, listening to the thunder of the falling water, the spray suspended in mist, the moss-clad rocks glowing in soft Scottish light.
Using sweeping, gestural brush-marks I sought to capture not just the physical form of the waterfall but its rhythm, motion and mood. The palette is deliberately rich yet atmospheric: deep forest greens, slate greys, turquoise flashes of rushing water, and soft ivory highlights where light penetrates the mist. The abstract treatment allows me to emphasise the emotional resonance of the scene rather than simply depict it.
In framing the composition, I focussed on vertical thrusts echoing the downward surge of water, contrasted by diagonal gestures suggesting the rock faces and the way light breaks across surfaces. Texture is important: impasto builds suggest rock and spray, while smoother transitions evoke the mist-laden air. When a viewer stands in front of the canvas I hope they feel drawn into that wild moment in the Highlands — the hush, the roar, the fresh chill of water and stone.
Every stroke was made with a sense of place: the ancient geology, the water’s determined flow, the Highland light that shifts so swiftly. The painting is the meeting point of memory, place and emotion.
