About this painting.
For me, the view across Loch Lomond from the high ground of Balloch Castle Country Park is one of those essential Scottish landscapes. It’s a scene I, like many others, have returned to time and again, and with this piece, I wanted to capture the feeling of a perfect, clear autumn morning.
Standing there, you can feel the crispness in the air. The light on a day like that is incredible - it’s low and golden, and it makes the early autumn colours in the trees positively sing. My goal wasn't just to paint the loch, but to paint that specific quality of light as it danced across the water and caught the edges of the distant hills.
The panoramic format felt essential. A standard canvas just couldn't contain the sheer breadth of the scene, the way your eyes scan from the wooded shoreline on the left, across that vast, glass-like expanse of water, all the way to the majestic silhouette of the hills in the distance.
My focus was on the layers of colour. I pushed the deep, calming blues of the water and the sky, contrasting them with the vibrant, earthy greens and golds of the foreground trees. The distant mountains are intentionally softened, fading into layers of blue and hazy purple, just as they do in real life, giving the painting a real sense of depth and scale.
This isn't just a painting of a place; it’s the feeling of that place. It's the peace you feel standing there, the quiet grandeur of the landscape, and the fresh, clean air in your lungs. It’s a piece of that quiet, majestic stillness, ready to bring the soul of the Scottish lochs into your home.
