About this painting.
While the wild landscapes of Scotland are my usual muse, the sheer electric energy of New York City at night offers a completely different, but equally compelling, inspiration. This original painting, "New York Nights," is my attempt to capture that vibrant, man-made spectacle – a stark contrast to the natural beauty I often paint.
My focus here wasn't on rendering every building perfectly, but on conveying the feeling of the Manhattan skyline after dark. I wanted to capture the dazzling intensity of the city lights, the way they pierce the darkness and reflect, maybe fragmented and almost abstract, on the water below. It's an urban landscape painting buzzing with energy, built with bold colours and perhaps a more dynamic, faster brushstroke than my usual work to reflect that pace.
Creating this NYC cityscape painting was about exploring light and reflection in a dense, architectural environment. Even though it's different from my Scottish scenes, it’s still an exploration of atmosphere, just a vastly different kind – the unique pulse of a metropolis. It's a key piece in my World Art Gallery collection, showcasing inspirations from travels beyond Scotland.
As a contemporary artist, I find these contrasts fascinating. I hope this original painting brings a piece of that unmistakable New York energy, that vibrant night scene art feeling, into your home. It’s a memory of standing there, surrounded by the towering structures and endless lights of the city that never sleeps.
