About this painting.
There's a unique magic to the Isle of Arran under moonlight, a quiet intensity that completely transforms the familiar landscape. Capturing that feeling was the heart of creating this original painting, "Sleeping Warrior Moonlight." The iconic Sleeping Warrior ridge, so dramatic in daylight, takes on a different, more mystical presence at night, bathed in that cool silver light.
When I painted this piece, I wasn't just focused on the shapes, but on the atmosphere. I wanted to convey the deep shadows and subtle highlights that moonlight creates, that sense of stillness over the water. This moonlight painting uses a palette of deep blues, violets, and touches of silver and grey to evoke that specific nocturnal mood – it's an atmospheric Scottish landscape unlike any daytime scene.
Working on this original art from Scotland, I built up textures, especially in the rugged silhouette of the mountains and the gentle ripples reflecting the moon. For me, as a contemporary Scottish artist, exploring how light – even the subtle light of the moon – interacts with the Scottish Highlands and Islands is a constant source of inspiration.
