About this painting.
As an artist based here on the west coast, I’ve always been captivated by the ever-changing presence of Ailsa Craig. It’s a landmark that holds a special kind of magic, especially during the fleeting moments between day and night. This original Ailsa Craig painting is my attempt to capture one of those moments – the profound sense of peace that settles over the Ayrshire coast as dusk descends.
I remember the evening that inspired this piece vividly. The sky was a symphony of deep blues, purples, and the last, fiery whispers of the departed sun. My goal wasn't just to paint a view, but to bottle the feeling of that specific, tranquil light. I wanted to convey the silence of the water and the stoic, ancient silhouette of the island as it prepared for the night.
Working with mixed media on canvas allowed me to build up rich textures, giving the sea a tangible depth and the sky a dramatic, atmospheric quality that a simple photograph could never replicate. This is more than just a seascape painting of Scotland; it’s a memory and an emotion brought to life through colour and texture.
