About this painting.
When I approached this painting of Castle Stalker, perched as it is on its little island in Loch Laich at dusk, I wanted to capture that moment of stillness when the day’s light slips away and the castle becomes a silhouette against the horizon. The title “Twilight” refers not just to the hour of the day, but to the in-between state: light and dark, land and water, solid form and soft reflection.
Composition & Mood
I placed the castle slightly off-centre, allowing the sweeping sky and its reflected tones in the water to play a big role. The water surface is calm but alive with subtle movement and reflection, creating a mirrored echo of the sky’s colours. I used faint layers of pastel-washed clouds fading into deeper blues and purples, with a warmer glow near the horizon, to suggest the sun has just dipped beneath the hills. The castle’s form is dark and grounded, its edges softened to merge subtly with its setting - I wanted it to feel ancient yet part of the landscape, not entirely separate.
Colour & Technique
For the twilight palette I mixed cool ultramarines and purples for the lakes and distant hills, contrasted with warming touches of peach and rose in the sky where the last light lingers. I applied the paint in thin glazes in the sky and hills to allow nuance and depth; the foreground water has slightly richer impasto to give texture and a hint of turbulence. The castle itself is painted in muted greys and deep charcoals, with just a touch of green moss-tone on its base to anchor it in the land.
Intention & Feeling
My aim was to evoke a sense of calm grandeur. By the time you reach this piece, you should feel as though you’ve arrived at a moment of reverence - the castle stands quietly, the day has ended, and the landscape holds its breath. It’s less about heroic action than about reflection, stillness and the passage of light. For me, this is Scotland’s quiet majesty - a place where history, water, sky and stone meet in an eternal moment.
