About this painting.
When I stand back and look at this Edinburgh Castle painting, it takes me right back to the feeling of being in Scotland's capital. Edinburgh isn't just a city; it has an atmosphere, a weight of history that you feel, especially when looking up at that magnificent castle perched on Castle Rock. That's what I wanted to capture in this original Scottish artwork.
It wasn't just about painting the building; it was about conveying the mood. The dramatic interplay of light and shadow, the ancient stones against a dynamic sky – maybe a hint of that famous Edinburgh haar (mist) rolling in. I work in an impressionistic style, using bold colours and energetic brushstrokes to bring the scene to life, focusing on the feeling rather than photorealistic detail. You can see the texture in the paint, the way the colours blend and contrast to create that sense of atmosphere.
For me, painting Edinburgh Castle is about connecting with Scotland's heart. It's an iconic landmark, instantly recognisable, and holds so much history and national pride. This piece comes from my Edinburgh & Glasgow Art Gallery collection, where I explore the unique character of Scotland's vibrant cities. I hope this original painting from Scotland brings a piece of that historic, atmospheric capital into your own space.
Thanks for viewing and reading about my artwork, and please don't hesitate to get in touch with any questions, Kevin.

My Scottish Art Notebook | An A5 Artist Journal for Your Notes & Ideas
I've always believed that the place where you write your thoughts should be just as inspiring as the ideas themselves. That’s why I decided to feature my paintings on these beautiful A5 notebooks. I wanted to create a portable piece of Scottish art that you can carry with you—a perfect companion for your notes, dreams, and plans. Each journal is designed to be a joy to use, whether you're organising your day at work or capturing a moment of creative inspiration.
To ensure the quality is just right, the softcover features a vibrant, high-resolution reproduction of one of my original Scottish landscape paintings, protected by a smooth, scuff-resistant matte finish that feels wonderful to the touch. Inside, you'll find 100 pages of high-quality, 90gsm lined paper, which I chose specifically because it’s a pleasure to write on and prevents ink from bleeding through. The A5 format is my favourite—large enough for comfortable note-taking but compact enough to easily slip into a bag.
It’s an inspiring space for all kinds of uses, from daily journaling and study notes to planning your next big creative project. Many people use them as travel journals to document their adventures, and they also make a beautiful and practical gift for the writer, student, artist, or planner in your life.
