Exploring the Painting: Largs Shoreline Dusk

In my painting, "Largs Shoreline Dusk", I wanted to encapsulate the feeling of standing by the shore at Largs, a location I have a deep connection with. This piece was commissioned to bring a bit of Scotland to a new home in Alaska, which makes it a journeyed piece of art.

The painting features a calm scene where two adults and a child walk along the beach, their silhouettes stark against the gentle hues of the sky. I positioned these figures towards the left, allowing the vast sky to dominate the composition. The colours transition from deep purples in the foreground to soft oranges and yellows in the sky, capturing the light and mood of dusk.

I used layers of colour and loose brushwork to create a sense of movement and depth, focusing on the broader atmosphere rather than intricate details. The horizon is low, which enhances the expansive view of the sky, a significant element of this landscape.

Creating a Connection Through Commissions

Painting this scene was particularly enjoyable because it’s a landscape I know and love. The idea that this view from Largs now lives on a wall in Alaska is a wonderful thought. It reflects how art can connect people with specific places and memories, no matter where they are in the world.
