About this painting.
When I stand back and look at this Edinburgh Castle painting, it takes me right back to the feeling of being in Scotland's capital. Edinburgh isn't just a city; it has an atmosphere, a weight of history that you feel, especially when looking up at that magnificent castle perched on Castle Rock. That's what I wanted to capture in this original Scottish artwork.
It wasn't just about painting the building; it was about conveying the mood. The dramatic interplay of light and shadow, the ancient stones against a dynamic sky – maybe a hint of that famous Edinburgh haar (mist) rolling in. I work in an impressionistic style, using bold colours and energetic brushstrokes to bring the scene to life, focusing on the feeling rather than photorealistic detail. You can see the texture in the paint, the way the colours blend and contrast to create that sense of atmosphere.
For me, painting Edinburgh Castle is about connecting with Scotland's heart. It's an iconic landmark, instantly recognisable, and holds so much history and national pride. This piece comes from my Edinburgh & Glasgow Art Gallery collection, where I explore the unique character of Scotland's vibrant cities. I hope this original painting from Scotland brings a piece of that historic, atmospheric capital into your own space.
Thanks for viewing and reading about my artwork, and please don't hesitate to get in touch with any questions, Kevin.

I wanted to create a journal that felt as inspiring as the landscapes I paint. The cover of each book features one of my pieces, protected by a soft, tactile matte finish. For me, the paper inside is just as important. That's why I chose a high-quality 90gsm stock; it's a pleasure to write on and substantial enough to handle different types of pens without bleed-through. It’s the perfect place to capture your own thoughts and adventures—a personal piece of Scotland to carry with you.Edinburgh Castle Hardback Journal from the Edinburgh & Glasgow Art Gallery Collection.
