About this painting.
With this abstract painting, 'The Waterfall', I wasn't trying to paint a specific, real place. Instead, I wanted to capture the essence of a waterfall – its energy, its constant movement, the sheer power and the cascade of colour and light you feel when you're near one. This piece is pure abstract art, born from that feeling rather than a direct visual.
Working in abstract art allows me that freedom to explore texture and colour in a really expressive way. You'll see I've built up layers of paint, letting the colours blend and interact to suggest the flow and spray of water. It's a textured abstract piece; I wanted the surface itself to have a dynamic quality, reflecting the subject's energy.
Creating this original painting was about translating that raw, elemental force into visual form. It’s less about seeing a waterfall and more about feeling its presence. For me, as a contemporary Scottish artist, even my abstract work often draws from the elemental power of nature that’s so abundant here in Scotland, though this piece speaks a more universal language of movement and energy.
